How to Check If a Fire Extinguisher Works

Ensuring your fire extinguisher is operational is a critical part of fire safety. Here are the essential steps to verify your fire extinguisher is ready for an emergency.

Check the Pressure Gauge

The needle on the pressure gauge should be in the green area. If it's in the red, the extinguisher has either been used or has lost pressure and needs to be serviced or replaced.

Inspect for Damage

Look for any visible signs of damage, such as dents, leaks, rust, or a broken or missing pin. The nozzle should also be clear of any debris.

Check the Inspection Tag

The tag should show the date of the last professional inspection. Fire extinguishers should be inspected annually by a certified professional.
